Healthcare Breaches Are a Cybercriminal’s Dream
Here we are again hearing about another data breach in the healthcare industry. In this particular case, it is the breach of personal information at Excellus BlueCross BlueShield. We only recently discovered this breach, but the hacking activity dates all the way back to December 23, 2013. The attack took nearly two years to discover and it affects more than 10 million people, mostly in upstate New York.
Healthcare records are the big “hits” that cybercriminals dream about. The information in these records is far more valuable than those in a retail data breach or even tax documents. Healthcare records consist of the most comprehensive data collected on individuals in existence. This industry continues to be a large target for cybercriminals. This is mainly due to weaknesses in their data defense and its slow response to this continuing growth of cyber attacks. Healthcare leaders have been slow to understand the threats they face from hackers, resulting in records that may not have been as well protected as other industries like the financial industry.
